Il verbo to be: forme e uso

I am ready, She is a designer, They are outside. Al presente scegli am, is o are; al passato was o were.

Be: spesso «essere», a volte «avere» in italiano

«Sono a casa» ed «È occupata» si dicono I am at home e She is busy.

To be è l'infinito con la particella to. In una frase non mettere to davanti a am, is, are, was o were. Dopo i principali modali usa be senza to: can be, will be, should be. To be compare quando la costruzione richiede l'infinito: want to be ready.

My brother is an architect.
Mio fratello è architetto.
The spare keys are in the drawer.
Le chiavi di riserva sono nel cassetto.
I want to be ready by eight.
Voglio essere pronto entro le otto.

Am, is e are al presente

Am si usa soltanto con I. Is accompagna he, she, it e i normali nomi singolari. Are accompagna you, we, they e i plurali.

Il non numerabile information prende normalmente is: The information is useful. Due persone collegate da and prendono generalmente are. Sostituisci il soggetto con un pronome per controllare: the printer — it — is; the printers — they — are.

Soggetto Presente Passato Esempio e traduzione
IamwasI am calm. — Sono calmo.
he / she / itiswasIt was quiet. — Era tranquillo.
youarewereYou are right. — Hai ragione. / Avete ragione.
we / theyarewereWe were outside. — Eravamo fuori.

Was e were al passato

Al Past Simple ordinario I, he, she e it prendono was; you, we e they prendono were. Aggiungi not per negare e metti was o were prima del soggetto per fare domande. Did non serve: Were they at home?, non Did they were at home?

Confronta presente e passato mantenendo l'idea: The room is empty now; The room was empty yesterday. If I were è possibile in una condizione immaginata; questo uso particolare non si trasferisce a un normale racconto su ieri.

I was in the library when you called.
Ero in biblioteca quando hai chiamato.
The shops were closed, but the café was open.
Were you tired after the journey?
Eri stanco dopo il viaggio?

Negazioni, domande e risposte brevi

Per negare metti not dopo be: am not, is not, are not, was not, were not. Is your new office near the station? Where is your new office? Se questa parola è soggetto, la sua funzione determina la costruzione: Who is ready?

La risposta breve riprende un pronome e la forma adatta di be: Yes, she is; No, they weren’t. Nella negativa sono possibili No, I’m not e No, she isn’t.

Un'idea in tre forme
Affermazione Negazione Domanda
She is available. She is not available. Is she available?
They are nearby. They are not nearby. Are they nearby?
He was at work.He was not at work. Was he at work?
We were early. We were not early. Were we early?

Contrazioni e apostrofo

Nel parlato e nei messaggi informali neutri, I’m, you’re, he’s, she’s, it’s, we’re e they’re sono comuni. La negazione può contrarre il verbo o not: She’s not ready e She isn’t ready hanno lo stesso significato di base. La forma standard per I am not è I’m not.

It’s può significare it is o it has: osserva ciò che segue. Il possessivo its non ha apostrofo: The tablet is in its case. Distingui anche you’re da your, they’re da their.

I’m not late; the clock is fast.
They’re ready, but their bags are still upstairs.
They’re significa they are; their indica il possesso.
Was she at the meeting? No, she wasn’t.
Era alla riunione? No.

Età, meteo e there is / there are

L'età si esprime con be: She is thirty, non She has thirty years. Meteo e ora prendono generalmente it: It is windy; It is half past six, «C'è vento», «Sono le sei e mezza». Anche le sensazioni si esprimono con be + aggettivo: be hungry, be cold, be afraid, nonostante «avere fame», «avere freddo», «avere paura» in italiano.

There is e there are introducono l'esistenza: There is a bench outside. It is outside colloca un oggetto noto. Nel modello scritto neutro concorda be con il nome: there is a bench, there are two benches; al passato there was e there were.

There is a message for you. It is on your desk.
I am cold, but the room is warm.
Ho freddo, ma la stanza è calda.

Be ausiliare: distinguere le costruzioni

Al Continuous, be accompagna -ing: She is reading, They were waiting. Al passivo accompagna il participio passato: The parcel was delivered. Mantieni be in queste costruzioni senza aggiungerlo davanti a ogni verbo principale. Per un'abitudine, She reads; per un'azione in corso, She is reading. She is read non esprime nessuna di queste due idee.

Confronta Are you busy? e Do you work here?

The technician is careful. The technician is checking the printer.
L'aggettivo inglese resta invariabile.
The printer is checked every month.
La stampante viene controllata ogni mese.Be e checked formano il passivo.
